The Opportunity:

The Department is seeking to establish a talent pool of experienced Senior Managers to fill both immediate and future opportunities within our Environmental Regulation division. This division is responsible for overseeing the regulation of industrial emissions and native vegetation clearing under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, playing a key role in protecting Western Australia’s environment while supporting sustainable development.

As a Senior Manager, you will be a key member of the Statewide Delivery Leadership Team, and report to the Director Statewide Delivery, Environmental Regulation. Your primary function as the Senior Manager is to manage the operational, workforce and financial planning of the relevant branch and the effective and efficient delivery of its regulatory services. As the Senior Manager you will be aware of general industry and environmental trends and respond to complex, contentious, and environmentally sensitive issues associated with industries being regulated by the branch.

We currently have two permanent position available, one for each of the below branches.

Heavy Industries - The Heavy Industries Branch leads the regulation of major projects and industries under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. This newly established branch assesses the environmental risks of emissions and discharges from large, technically complex projects, such as manufacturing plant, energy plant, and chemical refineries.  As part of a team dedicated to excellence in environmental regulation, you will play a key role in one of DWER’s most dynamic and high-impact areas, helping to shape sustainable outcomes for some of the State’s most significant development projects.

Waste Industries - The Waste Industries Branch plays a vital role in protecting the environment by regulating landfills, liquid waste facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and waste storage and transfer stations across the State. Operating under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, our branch assesses works approval and licence applications, ensuring rigorous environmental risk management through tailored conditions. You’ll contribute to advancing circular economy policies and programs, collaborate closely with the Waste Assurance Branch, and engage with a wide range of external stakeholders. If you are passionate about sustainable waste management and environmental protection, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

As a department we recognise that flexible working arrangements support effective work-life balance, empowers our people and increases team productivity. We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. We value the unique diversity of experience that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and youth bring to our workforce.

For further information about the opportunity we encourage you to contact Brad Jakowyna on (08) 6364 7965 or via email at brad.jakowyna@dwer.wa.gov.au during business hours.
