The Opportunity:

This is a Permanent opportunity

Are you ready to apply your scientific expertise to work that directly shapes environmental protection across Western Australia? Join the DWER’s Air Quality Branch and contribute to improving the air quality outcomes that support healthier communities and a cleaner environment.

In this role, you will lead specialist investigations in odour science and air quality modelling, provide high‑quality scientific advice on urgent or contentious matters, and support the development of guidelines, strategies and evidence-based reforms. You will collaborate with internal teams, industry, government and community stakeholders, while also mentoring colleagues and helping to build capability across the branch. Your work will be varied, challenging and influential, with the freedom to apply independent scientific judgement.

To succeed, you will hold a relevant science or engineering qualification and bring strong experience in air quality and atmospheric science, including dispersion modelling and analytical programming skills. You will be confident managing your workload, communicating technical concepts clearly, and producing high‑quality scientific reports. Experience in odour assessments, field investigations, Linux environments or FORTRAN will be highly regarded.

At DWER, you will be supported as a Personal Leader and contribute to a culture grounded in service, trust, care, openness and collaboration. We value diversity, cultural responsiveness and a safe, inclusive workplace where all employees—particularly Aboriginal people and communities—feel respected and heard.

The role involves occasional early mornings, evenings or on‑call work, and requires a WA C‑Class Driver’s Licence. If you are looking for a role where your expertise directly contributes to the well-being of communities and meaningful environmental outcomes, we encourage you to apply.

At the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, we are committed to fostering a modern workplace that supports flexibility, collaboration, and wellbeing.

Our flexible work arrangements include options for alternative work locations and adaptable schedules, designed to accommodate a variety of professional and personal needs.

We recognise that effective work can happen in different settings, and our approach reflects this, enabling staff to contribute meaningfully while maintaining balance and resilience.

We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. We value the unique diversity of experience that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and youth bring to our workforce.

Join us and be part of a department that values innovation, inclusivity, and the evolving nature of work.
