About the Office of the Appeals Convenor

The Appeals Convenor provides advice to the Minister for Environment on various matters relating to appeals lodged under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act). The primary function is the provision of a report which accompanies each appeal and informs the Minister's decision.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) supports the Appeals Convenor and Department staff who work in the Office of the Appeals Convenor (OAC) in their work through the provision of corporate support services and is the employing authority for staff of the office. Staff of the OAC are functionally separate to DWER and take direction from the Director at the OAC.

The OAC consists of a team of dynamic and solutions-focused environmental professionals who assist in investigations on a large range of environmental decisions, including environmental impact assessments, permits for clearing native vegetation, vegetation conservation notices, conditions applying to works approvals and licences and noise approvals.

The team work closely and collaboratively to support the Appeals Convenor to conduct their duties. The office is conveniently located in central Perth CBD, close to shops, cafes and public transport with access to a variety of planned building activities and outstanding end-of-trip facilities.

The Opportunity:

The OAC is seeking one permanent opportunity for an Appeals Coordinator to play a key role in delivering timely, evidence-based environmental appeals assessments.

This exciting role is based in the OAC, where you’ll contribute to assessing significant appeals that affect our unique Western Australian environment.

As an Appeals Coordinator (Level 6), you are the face of the Appeals Team. The role collaborates with the Director and supports the Appeals Convenor to ensure streamlined appeals processes from intake to delivery to the Minister. The role works closely with the Appeals Convenor, appellants, proponents and stakeholders across the public sector to resolve often challenging issues through to determination by the Minister. This role is responsible for receiving and triaging all incoming appeals to the Office of the Appeals Convenor, working collaboratively with the Appeals Team to define the appeal grounds and identify key issues. The role requires a high attention to detail to ensure quality of all outputs and that all required information is provided, seeking clarification where required.
