About the Office of the Appeals Convenor
The Appeals Convenor provides advice to the Minister for Environment on various matters relating to appeals lodged under the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act). The primary function is the provision of a report which accompanies each appeal and informs the Minister's decision.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) supports the Appeals Convenor and Department staff who work in the Office of the Appeals Convenor (OAC) in their work through the provision of corporate support services and is the employing authority for staff of the office. Staff of the OAC are functionally separate to DWER and take direction from the Director at the OAC.
The OAC consists of a team of dynamic and solutions-focused environmental professionals who assist in investigations on a large range of environmental decisions, including environmental impact assessments, permits for clearing native vegetation, vegetation conservation notices, conditions applying to works approvals and licenses and noise approvals.
The team work closely and collaboratively to support the Appeals Convenor to conduct their duties. The office is conveniently located in central Perth CBD, close to shops, cafes and public transport with access to a variety of planned building activities and outstanding end-of-trip facilities.

The OAC is seeking two Principal Environmental Officers - Appeals to lead small, high-performing teams in delivering timely, evidence-based environmental appeals assessments.
These exciting roles are based in the OAC, where you'll play a pivotal part in assessing significant appeals that affect our unique Western Australian environment.
As a Principal Environmental Officer – Appeals (Specified Calling Level 4), you will:
- Lead and mentor a team of Senior Environmental Officers - Appeals.
- Drive the appeals investigation process under the EP Act.
- Collaborate closely with the Director and Appeals Convenor to shape strategic and operational plans.
- Enhance governance and contribute to the continuous improvement of the Office’s functions.
